Test Book Cover Design

A blurb test book was created so that we could see how pages print and watch out for mistakes. For the book we each had to design a front and back cover. This is my design, I wanted to go for something really bold and eye catching, so used black and white shapes to create patterns.

Project 24 - Jazz Band

My instrument - a Doodle Buzz

Jazz Band involved two parts. First create an instrument, then perform as a group with all of our instruments. I created something which makes a high pitched buzzing noise. The noise is made by greaseproof paper tightened around a tube.

Project 23 - blazing biographies

Harvey ball - week 3
Harvey ball was a generous man who believed it is important to try and make others happy, no matter how small the act of kindness, it is still significant. This is what I focussed on for my project. My idea has developed from making 'boxes of happiness' to happiness gift bags, as I was able to make more of them, enough for the whole class. I am really pleased with how they have turned out and like that you can see what's inside them as I think it makes them more visually appealling and will capture attention more than a box.

Harvey ball - week 2

Creating my idea

My project has lots of individual pieces to it which will make up the finished idea. I am going with the 'happy boxes' idea - boxes which I will fill with various things, including a lot of design based things made by me...

Here's what I've made so far:

Happiness quote cards

Made with famous or inspirational quotes. I want to create more of these as I have more quotes ready to use.

Happy tips

Poem with my photography

I have this poem in one of my favourite books, and thought it was perfect for this project, promoting the idea that doing little things for others is important.

Smile tags

I'd like to make these into stickers. Maybe using double sided tape, i'm just a bit worried about damaging people's walls and surfaces!

Smiling makes you beautiful

This little round card is either going to have the words 'smiling makes you beautiful' on the back or some information about world smile day.

Free!

I need people to know that it is okay to take these packages and that they wont be stealing someone else's pretty box! so i've made these 'free' circles to stick to the front of the boxes along with whatever else i'll be decorating them with.

Free stuff

Everybody loves a freebie, especially when there's no catch involved! I've gathered various confectionary and some hot chocolate and marshmallows ( which i'm going to make into a mini package with an illustration on the front) I will probably include more stuff, I'm thinking about silly things like bouncy balls or bubbles to bring people back to their childhood.

More ideas

Other things I'm planning for these happy boxes include -

Posters with illustrations on them promoting happiness with through sillyness and things that generally make people quite happy.

Pretty wrapping paper to make them visually appealling (hopefully home made or printed with something i've designed)

Making more happy tips and quote cards

A few more silly fun things

Harvey Ball

Ball is best known for his creation of the 'smiley', a now worldwide known logo of happiness and goodwill.
From researching Ball the main thing that really stood out to me is his dedication to caring for others. There are a few examples of this, which span across his entire life.....

1. Military service - He spent a large amount of his life serving his country:
  • He was based in Asia and the Pacific during World War 2, resulting in him being awarded the Bronze star for heroism during the Battle of Okinawa.
  • He served 27 years in the National Guard.
  • He served 6 years in the army reserves and retired as a full colonel in 1979, after which he was awarded Veteran of the Year award from the Worcester Veterans Council in 1999.
2. His invention of the 'Smiley'.
Unlike other commercial artists who try to cash in on their designs in every possible way, Ball only recieved $45 for his creation, and made no money at all from the success of the logo as he did not copyright it. Rather than being bitter about this though he saw the smiley face as his gift to the world and wasn't worried about recieving any financial return for it. His son said that he never regretted it and was not a money driven guy.

3. His legacy.
After his death in 2001, Ball is still caring for others through the "Harvey Ball Conservation Area" and "The World Smile Foundation". The conservation area is located on the land which his family owned and is home to a wildlife sancturary and conservation area which the public are welcome to enjoy. The charity was founded after his death and is based on his belief that each one of us has the ability to make a positive difference in this world. He believed that any kind act, no matter how small is worthwhile.

The charity also runs 'World smile day' every year. Here is a clip about world smile day.....

So what are you supposed to do on world smile day? Do a little act of kindness to make others smile. E.g make smiley face cakes and give them to people, because who doesn't like cake?!

Here's a quote I found which I feel sums up what world smile day is trying to encourage:
Never get tired of doing little things for others. Sometimes those little things occupy the biggest part of their hearts.

This is what stood out to me the most about Harvey Ball. He understood
The power of a smile and a kind act

I would like to base my project on happiness and doing something kind for others.
I've had a few ideas such as:
Creating artwork to make others smile and leaving it in random places for people to look at or take.
Making a documentary on me doing little random acts of kindness.
And... something else, which is a bit of a surprise and combines elements of the first two ideas, plus more.....

Project 22 - Too sweet

Design for my confectionary. This was a cool project idea, who doesn't like sweet things? So designing my own packaging was fun. I chose white chocolate ( the best chocolate in my opinion!) I pretty much made something I would buy if I were to see it in a shop. Its aimed at the female market, bunnys, pinkness - stereotypical maybe but I figured if I was going to design something cute and girly I may aswell go all out! It doesn't look as bold here as it does in full size or the size it would be if it were sitting on a shelf. I think it  does look a lot better on A2.

Project 21 - McStack

Buy ten burgers and stack them up. Sounds easy, but it's not exactly... 10 burgers do not actually sit on top of each other very well without wobbling and falling over! My large drink cup helped a bit and acted as a support for them, and eventually I got the photo and drawing done for this project. Despite the problems, I actually quite like my finished drawing.

People give you strange looks when you stack burgers in Mcdonalds, I'm not sure if they thought I was greedy or just a bit insane.

Project 20 - I'm Game

I'm Game involved creating a game for graphic designers. I chose to make a card based game in which teams have to name a brand, with the help of a team mate attempting to describe it - but without saying certain words popularly associated with the brand. I designed the box, cards and score sheet.

Project 19 - Goalscorer

I planned out the next 30 years of my life for this project. I did it in stages such as by the year 2020 I want to have: .........
I chose to display it in an hourglass to represent times moving.
